Also, we could have explored how Richie got back from Xibalba. For one, we could have maybe showcased Amaru's villainy a bit more or had a more intense final fight. If this finale was broken up into two hours, some aspects could have been improved. I just expected Amaru in her true form to be so much more of a threat. I get that Amaru couldn't hurt Kate, and some of the conversations that happened as Kate was walking to the gate were fantastic, but all in all, it was a little anticlimactic. Seth was right there, and Amaru knows how much he means to Kate, but she never tried to threaten or kill him to get Kate to stop. Amaru just taunts Kate, and once she saw that threatening Scott didn't change Kate's mind, she did not try to change her tactics. The final showdown in front of the gate is kind of lame. She has shown just how far her reach goes, and she proved that she will do whatever it takes to return to her true form and unleash hell on Earth. All season long, she's been this fierce adversary. Okay, here's my problem with Amaru in this finale. What's your theory on why Kate ran off with the Geckos? Maybe, after everything she has done, Kate believes that she can only live in the morally gray area that Richie and Seth know so well. Maybe she does it to get her toaster, maybe she realized that she needs that adrenaline rush in her life, or maybe Kate decided that being the preacher's daughter isn't in the cards for her anymore. I'm curious as to why she chose to go into a life of crime with the Geckos. Kate going with the Geckos in the end was an amazing twist for a variety of reasons. I meant to go this super painful route (I'm so sorry). Somehow I knew they'd show up to collect. Kate: No, in the eyes of the people I love. Kate: After all that I've done, I deserve this walk.Īmaru: Are you here for redemption? In who's eyes? In your God? For Seth, paying for his sins means losing someone he loves. Kate has always represented the humanity in Seth, and he has come to love her for it. Seth, on the other hand, believes that letting Kate go through the gate, and therefore losing her forever, is what he deserves for all his sins. Kate feels guilty for her role in everything that happened because she felt like she should have been able to stop Amaru. Kate believes so because of what she witnessed and what her body did while Amaru was in control. If you don’t have pastry flour, that’s okay as I didn’t the day I made this recipe. In this recipe, we used Crisco so I made sure to put it in the refrigerator a few hours before making the crust.įlakier Crust: You can also ensure a more flaky crust by using half pastry flour and half all-purpose flour. Keep the shortening cold: As with any pie crust recipe, you’ll want to make sure your shortening is very cold before starting. How do you enjoy your apple dumplings? I like them straight up, my husband likes them with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and my mom pours milk over hers. If it’s any indication, my brother’s face lit up when I told him out in the field (it’s harvest time) that I had made apple dumplings for dessert (so that I could share with you) – and he was soooo excited! We all leap for joy when apple dumplings are on the menu. There’s no caramel sauce or anything else to add because they don’t need it! It’s a party in your mouth. If you have time this weekend and want a treat – these apple dumplings are the best! Crispy, tart and with the sweetness of sugar - soooooooo good. It’s the pie crust recipe that was passed down to her – and it won my sister an award at the county fair. And I don’t just mean that because she’s my mom. How to Make Old Fashioned Apple DumplingsĪ good old fashioned apple dumplings from scratch recipe like this one I’m sharing today, starts with a good pie crust. You will find these at select apple orchards in the fall. Idared Apples – This is an old fashioned apple that is perfect for baking.Granny Smith Apples – Tart and delicious, these are the easiest to find in the grocery store year around. They have a nice tartness and hold up very well when baked. Jonagold Apples– These are my personal favorite but hard to find during certain seasons. Here’s a few that I recommend and the only apples I use for baking. You also need a tart apple to balance the sweetness of the sugar and cinnamon. You cannot just use any apple to get that tart delicious filling in an apple dumpling (or any apple dessert in my opinion.) You need an apple that bakes well and doesn’t become mushy. Apple dumplings are all that is right with the world. They have the flakiness of a pie but there is more crust per bite which is what I personally love about them. They are tart apples baked in a sea of butter, cinnamon and sugar nestled in homemade pie crust. How to Make Old Fashioned Apple Dumplings. The other option is to do it like most everyone else does it, and after step 3, go to step 5, and then bake for 45 minutes. I didn't worry too much about it, in other words :p Once that's done, serve them warm with vanilla ice cream!! You may still see the Mountain Dew sloshing around on the bottom, but as the pan cools, the dumplings themselves will soak all of that up. Then pour the can of Mountain Dew around the outside.ħ. I used a spoon to make sure each dumpling got at least a couple of spoonfuls. Once the 10 minutes are up, open the oven door, and pour the mixture evenly on the apple dumplings. Also, I used brown sugar, but I've seen recipes that let you use normal white sugar as well.Ħ. If you do, you get an even coating, and if you don't, you get a crunchy, sugary coating on the dumplings. I mixed it very well, but you don't have to. Melt the butter! Once the butter's melted, take it off heat and mix the sugar and cinnamon in. Most folks will say to pour the sauce on, then stick them in the oven, but letting them bake for 10 minutes first not only allows you time to make the sauce, but also makes the crescent dough start to bake so it doesn't get all doughy on the top where you want the dumpling to be crunchy!ĥ. You'll have 16 of the crescent roll dough triangles to use.Ĥ. Extra apples can be put to the side (or immediately consumed :D). Take a triangle of the crescent roll dough and roll a slice into it. The peeling is important as I left one unpeeled (just to see what'd happen) and the skin got leathery? It didn't taste bad, it just didn't cut easily.ģ. Peel and core the apples and cut them into 6 slices each. (I used a nonstick pan so I didn't bother spraying)Ģ. Preheat oven to 350 and spray a 13x9 pan. My coworker gave me this recipe to try out because she knew us foodies were going to cook for the rest of the hackerspace.ġ. I made them for the first time this past Friday in fact. These look, smell, and taste amazing! They're also dead simple to make. wrote in a trade magazine in March.ĪBC asked Home Title Lock how many cases of title theft it has found, as well as any situations in which the service has helped someone reclaim a stolen title and how much was spent covering a customer’s legal fees. “From what I’ve been able to find, this is rare,” Colleen Taylor of the Old Republic National Title Insurance Co. “If it comes up once a year, I’d be surprised,” Nathan Bossers of Boston National Title told me. While some jurisdictions said it is not common, others said it was epidemic.īut Steve Gottheim, general counsel for the American Land Title Association (ALTA), told ABC that his members are “not seeing nationwide.” But the document he provided was nearly two decades old and “wasn’t about home title theft at all,” but rather mortgage fraud, ABC found.Īs the network points out, the two are entirely different: “Mortgage fraud involves lying to lenders to obtain loans, while title theft involves filing fraudulent documents with county authorities to claim ownership of a property.”ĪBC also checked with numerous sources to see just how prevalent title theft really is. Another Title Lock spokesman, former FBI agent Art Pfizenmayer, provided a document to ABC to try to justify the claim. In a major story published in mid-June, the network said the FBI has no evidence of ever making such an assertion. Indeed, the company claims that the FBI classifies home title theft as “one of the fastest growing” crimes in America.ĪBC News has thoroughly trashed that claim, along with the unsubstantiated claims of two supposed victims of the crime. But the company, whose spokesmen include defrocked attorney Rudy Giuliani and former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, maintains it happens with regularity. There’s no telling how often home title theft occurs. To “protect” homeowners from this scam, Home Title Lock said it will monitor a subscriber’s title, 24-7, and notify them right away if anyone tampers with it. Unless the deed is obviously fake, it is recorded as a matter of course. The county recorder is obligated to place the title in the records, but not to verify its legality. The bad guys do this by simply forging your name on a deed and recording it with county officials. Home title theft is when a criminal gains the title to your home and either sells it or takes out a mortgage on it. Such, it appears, is the case with Home Title Lock, an outfit that promises to “protect” you from home title theft. The reason being is that you use Flex within another program, so there’s no need to duplicate the cataloguing function and potentially slow down your program. Luminar Flex has no cataloguing capability, but this is actually an advantage. What it does do – incredibly well – is add some exciting, unique features to Photoshop and Adobe Lightroom, without slowing down the software. It isn’t a standalone editing program – if that’s what you’re after, opt for the Luminar 3 or Luminar 4 software instead. The idea for this Skylum software is that you use it within Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom Classic, or Photos for macOS. Gone are the days when you had to spend hours watching tutorials and mastering complicated manual techniques. Using Artificial Intelligence, anyone from beginners to pros can make their photos look outstanding. Skylum has harnessed the latest technology to create intelligent one-click Looks, powerful AI filters, and advanced post processing tools. Smooth, fast, and simple, Flex should make editing your photos very easy. Luminar Flex is a plugin developed by Skylum to enhance your workflow and make it easy to edit your photos within Lightroom or Photoshop. How do I use Luminar Flex in Lightroom?.What is the difference between Luminar AI and Luminar Flex?.A single license can be used on a mixture of operating systems, so if you have both Mac and Windows computers, you’ll appreciate this extra convenience. Luminar starts at $79 USD and can be installed on up to two computers (depending on the version you get). Bear in mind that, if you have both Mac and Windows devices, you’ll have to buy a separate license for each operating system. And you can install Affinity on up to two computers for individual commercial use, or up to five computers for home non-commercial use. Affinity costs just $54.99 USD (great value for the money, in my view). In response, many software developers created their own one-time-license programs – including the makers of Affinity Photo and Luminar.īoth programs can be bought for a one-off price. When Adobe changed Photoshop and Lightroom over to subscription-only models, they annoyed a lot of photographers. Affinity froze on me several times, and I did get the dreaded “Program not responding” message, but it was simply a case of waiting for a few moments before it started working smoothly again. Luminar froze on occasion, but was faster to load images and adjustments than Affinity Photo. I use a Windows 10 laptop that is more than capable of running both programs at once, but I trialed each program separately to see how well they performed. Both Affinity Photo and Luminar 4 are processor-intensive programs, so make sure you have enough memory available before hitting the download button. The power of your computer and graphics card make a big difference when using photo and video editing software. I used a landscape shot of the beach and sea to test the sky enhancement functions, though you should be careful when applying AI Sky Replacement to images with objects along the horizon. I’m impressed by the AI Sky Replacement (and had a lot of fun playing around with this!), plus there’s a huge range of skies to choose from, including sunsets, starry skies, and bright blue skies. At full strength, they often look a bit too strong, though you can always adjust the strength slider for a more natural look. With Luminar, it’s all about getting your editing done quickly and with minimum fuss, and the AI tools work okay, but I still have some reservations. Luminar 4 utilizes AI technology for some of its editing tools, including AI Sky Replacement and AI Augmented Sky. Which program offers superior editing capabilities? It’s a close call. Plus, Affinity Photo offers every kind of advanced editing/retouching/graphic design tool you can imagine, as well as printing options. There’s only a limited range of built-in LUTs, but you can always find more on the internet. You won’t find many presets in Affinity Photo, but you will find tools like Mesh Warp, Pen, Rectangular Marquee, and Clone Stamp. Click on your chosen Persona to see the tools you’ll need for the job for instance, in Develop, the huge plethora of tools down the left-hand side of the screen are replaced by a few editing essentials, perfect for getting basic editing processes out of the way. There’s one for Photo, Liquify, Develop, Tone Mapping, and Export. Instead of workspaces, Affinity Photo uses something called Personas. That number has only grown in the past six years. In 2013, Riot Games reported that 67 million people played League of Legends per month. According to a report by SuperData Research, it is the most played PC game in North America and Europe. Since its release in 2009, League of Legends has become one of the most popular games in the world. It’s been over two years now since I’ve last played and while there are still moments where I get the itch to play again, overall I’m glad that I made the decision to quit.Ĭredit: How Many Hours Have I Wasted on Lol Total? Thankfully, I realized how much money I was wasting and how unhealthy my addiction had become so I stopped cold turkey. I would spend hours upon hours playing and when I wasn’t playing I was thinking about playing. I was addicted and I had to have every skin and every champion. I wasted $300 on League of Legends in its first year. According to Riot Games, it is played by 650 million people. Lol is one of the most popular Internet games. The game is a free-to-play title supported by microtransactions. Designed by developer Riot Games, Lol was unofficially released in October 2009. Lol, also known as League of Legends, is a five-player online battle arena video game based on the Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne mod Defense of the Ancients. But it’s been worth every minute! How Much Money I Wasted on Lol So how long have I wasted on League of Legends? A lot of time, for sure. Even though it can be frustrating at times, I can’t imagine not having League in my life anymore. I’ve made so many friends through the game and we always have a blast when we’re playing together. I’ve spent countless hours playing League of Legends. Little did I know that four years later, I would be just as addicted as my friends were! I decided to give it a try and see if it could help me de-stress as well. I would see my friends playing this game and they always looked so relaxed and happy. I remember being in college and feeling so stressed out all the time. It’s been a little over four years since I first started playing League of Legends. I have played it for 2 years and 9 months. When you get into a fight, then, you’d assume that the camera would maybe zoom in to a micro level, lay out all the terrain of that one hexagon and let you fight it out, right? That’s how scale works – your current view is blown up, so the actual real human being sized view is going to have to go down. You can see from the image above that it’s all kinda scaled down – so you’ve got a whole city in that center tile there. And you’ve got figures that walk around on the tiles – those are your armies and so on, they’d be like Monopoly figures on a board or something. There’s a global view, and you can click into cities to get a pop-up table and do all your city shit. It seems fine – as illustrated by the point that we don’t really notice it in the first place.įor contrast, let’s move to Endless Legend. It kinda seems to fit, right, it doesn’t make us go ‘hold the fuck up that’s inconsistent’. What’s important for our purposes is that we can acknowledge that gap without it feeling like a massive gaping hole in the fabric of the fiction. That’s not to say that the game is bad – Jesper Juul has a quote about how if you tug hard enough at any video game, you’ll always find the gaps, the places where the rules aren’t really consistent enough to maintain the fiction. Obviously when you finish a battle you get a battle report and it’ll tell you that the fight took two months even though it took like a minute tops, and – so there’s some slippage here, right. That’s how fast those ships would be firing if a game-second corresponded to a real second. So I tend to the belief that the battles are real-time – even just on a visual level. Logically, either these ships can only fire once per day, or there’s a bit of slippage and the battles are actually kinda real-time even though that’s not how time is supposed to work in Stellaris. Look at how frequently the different ships are moving and firing – remember, of course, that each real second it supposed to be a day in the fictional world. Check out this video below – it’s a minute and a half of combat. When two fleets are in combat, it seems much closer to a real-time battle. But there’s actually a little slip in how the game approaches time – there’s a little inconsistency. You get resources replenished at the end of each month, so you get them every 30 seconds – it’s just how the game’s depiction of time works. The other thing to note about Stellaris is that every real-time second counts for one in-game day. You have to scroll into the system to actually see the ships properly. It’s worth noting as well that there’s different types of representation on each level – so if you’re on the galaxy map, your ships show up as little icons next to the system that they’re in. You can scroll in and out between the two of them, that sort of thing, but I find that most of the gameplay really takes place on the galaxy map. So in Stellaris you’ve got two main visual modes – the map of the whole galaxy, and the maps of each individual system. Now Endless Legend is another 4X – it’s turn-based, rather than the real-time gameplay of Stellaris, and it’s got more of a fantasy vibe. Stellaris is easily the most approachable of their games, and today I wanted to talk about how it does combat, especially compared with Endless Legend. :) You are welcome. So if you haven’t played Stellaris, it’s a space 4X strategy game from the team that made Crusader Kings and all that other real high-maintenance crap. I thank you and for your time and thoughts I have sent you a reward. Originally posted by ZumZoom:Personally, I burnt out of Stellaris after 6-7 runs, maybe I just don't know how to roleplay (also I don't play multi). What I really like is the diverse playable empires, each has their unique way of playing, which really helps with replayability. Combat is unexciting, it's sort of like rock-paper-scissors, and AI isn't much of a challenge even on highest difficulty (somewhat better with ESG mod). Exploration is not as fun as Stellaris (in the sense of discovery, though Stellaris quests did get repetitive after a while too), but it does the job. Quantity and quality of planets affects available pop slots and various bonuses. Micromanagement is way better in my opinion, it's system-based, rather than by-planet - you build improvements in a system as if it were a city in a Civ game. :DĮS2 is turn-based, systems are connected by lanes, but later you can unlock free movement between two unconnected systems by researching new tech. They are similar in being 4X in space, and that's about it. Personally, I burnt out of Stellaris after 6-7 runs, maybe I just don't know how to roleplay (also I don't play multi).ĮS2 I played about 20 runs by now, and I do get burn-out after a long campaign, but I still feel the urge to come back and play another one after a month or two. Releasing right after Horizon Forbidden West and what is being hailed as “one of the greatest video games ever” in Elden Ring, it is safe to say that Elex II is going to be drowned out of the conversation apart from the steady few who are fans of the original and have been, like myself, eagerly awaiting this sequel. Elex is a game about player choice in how you fit into its world around its diverse factions and the powers and abilities that can be yours if you so choose. There is a vastness to the freedom you're given here, not just in picking a direction and seeing what you'll find, but in the way you can customize Jax and his abilities. Now, granted, there are some technical and narrative caveats there as well as some other design limits I'd placed on those comparisons, but I still stand by it. If I was to describe Elex II to someone who has never seen or played the original, I would likely go as far to say it's if Fallout played and resembled something more akin to The Witcher III. And, thankfully, Elex II more than lives up to what I wanted from it, making this one of the best Euro-jank games out there. Elex is a franchise that fits perfectly into that same conversation, creating a world that is engaging to explore and play around in so long as you have set the proper expectations on what you're about to take part in. Technomancer, Greedfall, Bound by Flame, all of which developed by Spiders, are games that alongside Piranha Bytes' own Risen and Gothic series, are enjoyable games fueled more so by passion than cutting edge visuals or provided a considerable budget. The Euro-jank genre, which Piranha Bytes is no stranger to, is a classification of games I adore. Elex II is a continuation of what the original gave us back in 2017, albeit far more polished and technically more impressive than ever, even if it does still have its issues. It's not perfect, but it's also the type of game we don't seem to get much anymore unless some big AAA publisher is behind it, likely injecting microtransactions or filler to pad its length. And yet, it all works, creating a world that is just as diverse in its quests, environments, and narrative. The original Elex felt like a mixed container of action figures dumped onto the floor as a child would pick them up and smash them together, creating lore that somehow saw technologically advanced cyber-soldiers at war with a faction that looks like they were ripped out of Mad Max, or Lord of the Rings. Sometimes, however, repairs can be more involved and may require removing loose sections of plaster and filling in the spot using a standard Three-Step Plaster Method. Patching plaster walls can be as simple as skimming over small cracks with new plaster. If this is the case, the best way to ensure that the walls remain in good shape is to regularly inspect them and repair cracks as soon as you notice them. For many, plaster walls are a big part of an older home’s historical charm, and they’re well worth keeping intact. As long as they’re in decent condition (in other words, not falling away from the lath in chunks), you may opt to leave them as they are. If you live in a house built before 1940 and the walls haven’t been updated, they are most likely plaster. Most houses built before 1940 have lath and plaster walls that need regular inspections and repairs. When moisture from leaks saturates the wood laths, it increases the risk of chunks of plaster coming loose and falling from the wall or ceiling.ģ.Starting in the 1970s, blown-in fiber insulation was added to many lath and plaster homes, but plaster obstructions and wood blocks within the stud spaces didn’t allow for even distribution, so entire portions of walls were left without any insulation. Older homes with lath and plaster walls rarely contain adequate insulation. That’s because the spaces between the lath and studs are often filled with a few inches of fallen plaster, which block the space and prevent an electrician from “fishing” new wiring through the walls. It’s difficult to retrofit lath and plaster walls with new wiring without cutting into the walls. If the settling is substantial, chunks of plaster are likely to fall off the lath framework. Over time, most houses naturally settle when they do, plaster, which is hard and brittle, can often crack.Lath and plaster construction does, however, have its downsides.įor all its ambience, character, and positive acoustical traits, there are good reasons why lath and plaster fell out of vogue. RELATED: 15 Drywall Alternatives You’ll Wish You Had Known About Sooner 2. This makes it easier to create custom curves and arches in walls and ceilings. Lath and plaster is more contour-friendly than rigid drywall panels are. While plaster walls are smooth and flat, they can contain slight surface trowel marks that add some desirable Old World character to a home.Plaster is more fire-resistant than drywall. This is why older homes are often much quieter than new homes with interior walls that are made from drywall. The thick, dense layer of plaster dampens the transfer of noise from one room to the next.Lath and plaster walls provide a measure of insulation, helping homes stay warmer in winter and cooler in summer. This thickness offers some distinct benefits: In combination with the lath framework beneath, lath and plaster together comes to about 1¼ inch thick. A typical lath and plaster wall required a minimum of three coats of plaster, resulting in a dense, rock-hard coating nearly 1 inch thick. Powdered lime, sand, and fibers (often horsehair) were the traditional ingredients used in the creation of lath and plaster walls. Dense lath and plaster provides some insulation, fire resistance, and soundproofing. RELATED: What’s the Difference? Drywall vs. If your existing home has lath and plaster walls-or if you’d like to incorporate new plaster walls in a remodeling project-keep reading to learn more about this old construction method that’s gaining new fans. Lath and plaster construction is definitely an old school technique, but when compared to drywall, it has a few surprising benefits. should list what weight they're rated to support, so you can compare based on your requirements. When drywall panels came on the scene in the 1950s, they soon replaced lath and plaster as a quicker, easier install option. Note that ANY type of wall anchors - be they for hollow wall, brick, concrete, etc. There are other variations on the design where the tip splits apart (similar to in Ethan's picture) or in other ways improves the holding strength. instead, how about something like this? They drill in like a standard EZ Anchor, then the toggle opens up when you drive the screw in: if the site has wooden studs, however, you can use these, and they'll drill right into the wood:įor more holding power, toggles are great, but you're back to the two-stage procedure of drilling a BIG hole first. Of course, one of the gotchas with these is when you run into a stud with them, and then you have a big hole chewed out. Second Ethan's suggestion for EZ-Anchors, except I prefer the metal ones - I find with the plastic ones, either the screwdriver slot strips out too easily if the going gets tough (thick layer of paint or wallpaper, for example), or the tip mushes out before it penetrates (ditto). |
